Installing a pocket door in an existing wall, or retrofitting, is possible, but it requires serious reconstruction. If the target wall is load-bearing, a contractor or a structural engineer must install a temporary support. Any electrical wiring, HVAC ducts, or pipes need to be rerouted. The target wall has to be straight and deep and thick enough to house the pocket frame (standard 2x4 or 2x6 construction).

Yes, it's possible to have light switches and outlets on a pocket door wall, but it requires specialty hardware. To avoid blocking the door, use a shallow electrical box (1.5 inches deep or less). The wires need to be rerouted carefully around the door frame kit using clip attachments so the cables don't rub against the moving door.

Pocket doors are an excellent solution for any rooms where floor space is limited. They are typically used in small bathrooms to avoid bumping into or stepping around the toilet and the sink. They are also very practical for pantries, closets, and other utility rooms, especially if they're located in narrow hallways. There could be several reasons why a pocket door is sticking. There could be some dust and debris buildup along the top track, and vacuuming will resolve the issue. The top track could be unlevel, or the rollers might be loose, and everything needs to be tightened.The door panel may have warped, which can cause it to drag or catch against the frame and may require replacement.

Standard pocket doors can be difficult for individuals with limited mobility; however, with proper hardware, they can be ADA compliant. Traditional flush pulls used on pocket doors need to be replaced by loop handles or continuous pull hardware that doesn't require twisting or pinching. The door must provide clear clearance of at least 32 inches. The track system must use ball-bearing rollers so the door doesn't require more than 5lbs of force to slide open and close.
